Meet Alicia
The name Esse, is derived from medieval Latin, which means 'existence' or 'to be'. It is a word that invites us to look inwards, to be aware and discerning.
I started Esse because I was frustrated.
Not with fashion exactly. With the gap between what conscious fashion said it was and what it actually felt like to wear. Plain. Worthy. A little bit preachy. Like choosing it was a sacrifice you were supposed to feel good about.
I didn’t want to sacrifice anything. I wanted to get dressed in the morning and feel elegant without trying. I wanted pieces that could take me from home to wherever the day decided to go — without me having to think about it, plan for it, or change for it. I couldn’t find those clothes. So I made them.
Esse started from a very personal place — from my own wardrobe, my own frustrations, my own philosophy about what getting dressed should feel like. I’ve always believed that the best piece of clothing is the one you don’t notice you’re wearing. The one you reach for without deciding to. The one that’s just there, doing its job, while you do yours.
That’s what I design toward. Not a look. Not a trend. Not even a statement. A feeling of ease so natural that it becomes invisible — and in that invisibility, it makes space for you to be entirely yourself.
Every piece at Esse is made from materials I would choose for my own skin, by makers I know and visit, to a standard I hold myself to first. The sustainability isn’t the point of Esse — it’s just the only way I know how to make something worth keeping.
Because a blank canvas, to be worth anything, has to be made well.
